A Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Mount Rainier Elopement
So you're dreaming of eloping at Mount Rainier? You're in good company. With its wildflower meadows, dramatic mountain views, and moody alpine forests, Rainier is one of the most magical places to say “I do” in the Pacific Northwest. Whether you're planning an intimate ceremony with just the two of you or bringing along a few loved ones, here’s everything you need to know to make it happen.
1. Decide on the Time of Year / Choose Your Date
Mount Rainier is stunning year-round, but your experience will vary depending on the season:
Summer (July–September)
Wildflowers are blooming, trails are clear of snow, and access is easiest.
Paradise and Sunrise areas are both open & accessible.
It’s the most popular time, so plan for early mornings or weekdays.
Fall (Late September–October)
Gorgeous fall colors, fewer crowds.
Be prepared for chilly temps and possible rain/snow (& fog that might be covering up Tahoma)
Winter (November–May)
Snowy wonderland! Perfect for couples who love the quiet and don’t mind bundling up.
Some areas (like Paradise) are still accessible, but expect limited road access and need for snow tires/chains.
Spring (May–June)
Transition season—still snow at higher elevations, but waterfalls are flowing.
Wildflowers haven’t popped yet, but it’s peaceful and moody.
2. Choosing Your Elopement Location
Mount Rainier is huge, and not every area is accessible year-round. Here are some favorite ceremony spots:
Paradise
Iconic views, wildflower meadows, and a paved trail system. Best in summer.
Note: Gets busy—a sunrise elopement might be the way to go!
Sunrise
The highest point you can drive to in the park. Big views and alpine vibes.
Limited season (July–September).
Tipsoo Lake
Easy to access and stunning at golden hour.
Great for small groups or a two-person ceremony.
Reflection Lakes
Gorgeous mountain reflections if the wind is still. Short walk from the parking area. Dreamy at sunrise.

3. Apply for Your Special Use Permit
Yes, you need a special use permit if you’re planning a ceremony inside the park—even if it’s just the two of you. Here’s how it works: Complete an application form and pay the $25 application fee on Pay.gov.
Apply early. The park recommends submitting your application at least 4 weeks in advance, but the sooner the better—especially for peak summer dates.
Fee: $25 application fee + $250 management fee
Application: You’ll fill out a form and email it to the park’s permit office.
Limitations: Group size, locations, and setup may be restricted (no arches, chairs, amplified music, etc.).
Tip: Before applying, you will want to have a date & your top 3 location ideas to submit on the application!
You can find the application and details here.
4. Book Your Lodging
There’s no shortage of cozy cabins, chalets, and Airbnbs near the park. Or if you’re seeking something more rugged, there’s plenty of camping options as well!

Tips for a Seamless Rainier Elopement
Sunrise or weekday ceremonies = fewer crowds + best light.
Pack layers—even in summer, mornings and evenings are chilly.
Embrace the mood. Clouds and mist = magic on camera.
Leave No Trace. Stay on trails, don’t pick flowers, and keep this place wild and beautiful for others.
Book a photographer/videographer who knows the area and can help with logistics, backup plans, and find the best hidden spots.
